Another Miyawaki Forest Takes Root at SarvPriya Vihar MCD School

New Delhi, September 22 , 2024 — In a continuing effort to combat pollution, restore biodiversity, and foster environmental awareness, Rise Foundation successfully launched a Miyawaki afforestation project at SarvPriya Vihar MCD School. This initiative is part of the Foundation’s ongoing mission to create micro-forests across the Delhi NCR region, especially in urban spaces that face dwindling green cover.

The event was marked by the enthusiastic participation of students, teachers, and local volunteers, all eager to contribute to the transformation of a barren patch into a thriving green oasis. Over 600 saplings of native species were planted using the Miyawaki method, a technique known for rapidly growing dense, diverse forests that require minimal maintenance after the initial two years.

Speaking at the event, Shalini Bhardwaj, Project Coordinator at Rise Foundation, shared, “These Miyawaki forests play a crucial role in our fight against air pollution. With rising levels of pollution in Delhi, we need effective solutions, and urban afforestation is one of the most impactful. We’re not just planting trees today; we’re planting hope for a greener future.”

The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves planting native trees very closely together, creating a natural environment where the trees support each other’s growth. This accelerated growth model allows the forest to mature ten times faster than traditional plantations, making it ideal for urban areas where quick results are needed.

Students from the school were thrilled to be a part of the initiative. Many of them expressed a sense of pride and ownership in planting trees in their schoolyard. “It feels amazing to be part of something so important,” said Priya, a class 8 student. “We learned how these trees will help reduce pollution and provide fresh air for us all. It makes me feel like I am making a real difference.”

The Rise Foundation, which has led similar projects across various schools in Delhi, aims to empower young students with environmental stewardship while creating green patches that combat air pollution and enhance biodiversity.

With stubble burning in neighboring states contributing to Delhi’s pollution woes, such urban forests provide a breath of fresh air—literally. This project is a testament to the power of community-driven action and the potential to make a difference in the fight for clean air.

Rise Foundation plans to continue this series of Miyawaki afforestation projects in other parts of the city, hoping to establish a network of mini-forests that will collectively improve air quality and enhance local biodiversity.

Together for a greener future! 🌿✨
